THE TRAPP FAMILY LODGE
"The hills are alive, with the sound of music." You know the song. But did you know that the real von Trapp family relocated in Stowe, Vermont after their escape from the Nazis in WWII, and to this day, inhabit, work the land and operate a Five Star Inn, Restaurant and Brewery there? Well, they do, and it's a Great Escape destination for you and your dog.
We went to the Trapp Family Lodge in late September with Wesley & Jazzy. It's a huge Swiss style lodge nestled in the hills above Stowe. Our room was really good sized, and super comfy, especially with our own balcony and fireplace, which their Staff will even come and light for you. We made ourselves at home right away. The food at the in-house restaurant and tavern was amazing, and the wine list top-notch. There is Trapp Family and movie memorabilia throughout the resort, and every Thursday night they show "The Sound of Music" in the theatre.
From a dog perspective, the grounds are heaven on earth. There are acres of open fields and miles of trails to run around, as long as you stay out of their working farmland areas. In the Winter, the snow-covered grounds become a Cross-Country Skiing mecca.
If you feel like venturing away from the lodge, you're a short drive to hiking trails, covered bridges, Mt. Mansfield and of course, the shops and restaurants in the village of Stowe, where you'll surely want to visit the original Ben & Jerry's.
We spent most of our time hanging around the lodge, but no matter what time of year you visit, or how much of the local scenery you take in, you'll likely leave singing, and will no doubt be planning your return trip. You can check it out at: www.trappfamily.com.
