THE HAWTHORNE HOTEL
Looking to get out of town with your dog for a weekend that won’t have you driving five hours in the car? Try taking a thirty minute ride down 97 South to Salem, MA. It’s one of our favorite local getaway destinations we’ve taken Wesley, Jazzy and now David to over the last few years. It’s got everything: scenery, history, shopping, good food, water, walking and one of our favorite places to stay…The Hawthorne Hotel.
Named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, and said to be haunted (big surprise, being in Salem and all), the iconic hotel has been a Salem landmark since 1925. You and your dog will feel welcomed the minute you walk through the door. The rooms aren’t huge, but comfy, as is the lobby, where you’re welcome to hang out as long as you like as people come and go. You can even order food and/or beverages from their restaurant, Tavern on the Green while you relax.
Speaking of the Green, the Hawthorne is literally “on” the town Common, making it super convenient for walks and bathroom breaks. You’ll also find the Salem Witch Museum on the Common. Dogs aren’t allowed inside, and neither are cameras, but I did manage to sneak this pic as we were waiting for the tour to begin. Strange thing is there wasn’t anything yellow anywhere in the room. Talk about haunted.
You don’t even have to get in the car if it’s nice out. There’s the Peabody Essex Museum, and Pickering Wharf, where there’s tons of great shopping and dining, including a Pet Store where they make gourmet dog cookies. Oh, and one of our favorite Italian restaurants, Bella Verona, is right across the street. Last time we were there, we ordered dinner, and brought it back to our room.
Speaking of food, I’ve saved the best part for last. The Hawthorne Hotel actually has a Doggy Room Service Menu that your best friend will die for. Not sure if this was the winning point or not, but there isn’t much that David and Jazzy enjoy more than ordering breakfast in bed, so they give the Hawthorne Hotel 4 Paws up each.
Thought I’d end the article with this short video of Jazzy & Wesley having room service at the Hawthorne from 2010. Jazz barely hesitated, while Wes could hardly believe it..
