The “Firsts”... So Far
Because David is over a year and a half old and we’re just starting his Blog now, I’m thinking we ought to make note of all of his “Firsts”, since these milestones are all very important steps in his growth so far. I was going to do it timetable style, but I think I’ll group the events together instead.
His First week brought his First Nap in his new home, his First Photo Shoot, and because it’s important to look good for your First Photo Shoot, his First Bath.
“If you say so.”-Dave
“Yeah, it’s bad enough you’re a little dweeb, you don’t have to be stinky on top of it.”-Jazzy
Since being the new Prince of Free Dog is not all fun and games, we thought we’d better introduce him to some aspects of his new job. It was nice enough out to set him up on the patio at 7G for his First Day as (un)official Greeter. Marketing is an integral part of both he and Jazzy’s contracts, and he was surprisingly patient for his First Ad Campaign. Chores are part of every job too, so Auntie Jen took him for his First Ride on the John Deere (aka: Fred).
Still only a short time into his new life with us there were a few more Firsts for young David. His First Trip to the Beach (which he really liked), his First Ride in Jen’s Office Chair (which he liked even more),
“I love Auntie Jen.”-Dave
and his First Halloween Costume (which he was not impressed with at all).
Once he hit four months and those little razor-teeth started falling out, some Big Boy Firsts started happening. He made his First Real Friend. David and Brody became best buddies, and still play together every chance they get. He was also psyched when Kelly became his First Adult Dog Friend, and let him cuddle up with her for naps when she was Boarding with us.
“I love Kelly.”-Dave
Auntie Vida had been Dave’s First Wrestling Coach, teaching him how to play and being very tolerant of his sharp baby fangs. Very likely the highlight of his life came November 13th, 2014 when he had his First Smackdown with Jazzy. Apparently, this is the best activity ever, as they all engage in this on a regular basis.
“Yippee! She finally likes me!”-Dave
“Figured it was time to show him who the boss really is around here.”-Jazzy
His First Sleepover in Mom’s Bed also came in November, and also continues to this day. This was a giant step that I didn’t see coming ‘til much later. Now he even goes right into bed before me, though I think it’s just so he can pick the spot he wants First.
You can’t spend a whole year together without all of the First Holidays. Dave celebrated his First Thanksgiving with us. It started out fun. We dressed him up a little and prepared his little feast. We weren’t quite prepared for his reaction to his little feast. It might’ve been a little too soon for “people food”.
"Do you think? You people are supposed to be taking care of me" - Dave
He had the runs every half hour for 2 days.
“Yeah, Great Holiday. Can’t wait to do that again.”-Dave
His First Christmas went a lot better. Lots of black & white spotted cow presents, no “people food”.
“Christmas was tons of fun. Me & Jazzy got to rip open all our presents and we didn’t even get yelled at for making a mess.”-Dave
“Yeah, Christmas Rocks!”-Jazzy
And of course, there’s the mandatory First Easter Bunny Ear pic. Okay, this will happen every Easter.
What’s the biggest First of all? That’s right, David’s First Birthday. We always make a big deal about Birthdays around here. First we had his family cookout, then his First Camp Party.
“More black & white spotted cow toys. I don’t get it.”-Dave
“Yeah, enough already.”-Jazzy
As he was getting bigger and better behaved (see last week’s Training entry) we decided it was safe to bring him to his First Hotel Stay (we’ll be reviewing the Wildcat Inn & Tavern in a future Newsletter). His First Lake Weekend was tons of fun too, as he got to go on his First Boat and Canoe Rides.
Our First Real Family Vacation in Camden, ME (another future newsletter review) was definitely a highlight of our First year together.
“5 whole days with just us.”-Dave
“ I didn’t want to come home.”-Jazzy
“None of us wanted to come home.”-Jen
A few random firsts and not-so-fun Firsts also occurred. Dave’s First Snow (fun), His First Cone (not-so-fun) and his First Watermelon (fun).
I’ve saved the best for last. David’s First Time Swimming. I say swimming, but really, that’s a stretch. Swimming is not usually done vertically, and goes a lot smoother when using all four feet to paddle.
“Everybody knows that.”-Jazzy
His First few times in the water were a little on the scary side, but he had no qualms about diving back in, so we knew there was hope. Well, ‘I’ knew there was hope.
“That’s enough for now, we have all weekend to watch David drown.”-Jen
